Mining Town

In the neighborhood of La Arboleda, in Trapagaran, we find one of the best preserved mining towns in Europe. We will reach it at the funicular of La Reineta, which discovers from the air the ancient open-pit deposits, now converted into lakes surrounded by routes and green areas.

The development of mining attracted thousands of immigrants to Enkarterri at the end of the 19th century. The infrastructure shortage forced them to be housed in precarious homes, often barracks without the slightest privacy that was built at the foot of the mine.

The houses were built with wood to allow rapid disassembly and transfer if necessary. The mining house of Trapagaran brings us closer to the day to day of those workers who suffered misery and precariousness, and who laid the foundations for the industrial prosperity of Bizkaia and Euskadi.
